Zanzui Exploration Project

Zanzui Nickel/PGE Project

Blackdown is evaluating a second promising nickel deposit at Zanzui, 50km south of Dutwa.

The Zanzui Complex is a circular, layered ultramafic-mafic intrusion about 10km in diameter and covering an area of approximately 78km2. The central part of the complex forms a low but prominent hill, which is capped by a siliceous duricrust of weathered dunite.

The area was first investigated in the 1980s by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), which conducted geophysical, geochemical and mapping work and reporting extensive geochemical nickel anomalies. Analysed samples from one drill hole for platinum group metals (PGMs), reported a single value of 1.24g/t palladium. There are also reliable reports of platinum being panned from the Ng'wangulu River on the eastern margin of the complex.

In 2008 and 2010 African Eagle, following on from the successful drilling at Dutwa, targeted the lateritic cap at Zanzui.  Results from the drilling showed lithological similarities to the Dutwa deposit.

A JORC inferred resource estimate was prepared by Snowden Mining Industry Consultants Pty Ltd of Perth, Australia from the drilling data, which comprised of 75 vertical reverse circulation holes drilled on a staggered pattern of 100m x 200m for a total of 4, 363 metres of drilling. 27 million tonnes (“Mt”) at a grade of 0.81% nickel and 0.06% cobalt has been delineated. The estimated contained metal content is approximately 219,000 tonnes of nickel and 16,000 tonnes of cobalt. Full details of the resource and the key intersections are given below.

Key intersections

  • Key nickel mineralised intersections from Zanzui include
    • 39m at 1.5% nickel including 6m at 3.1%
    • 42m at 1.1% nickel including 6m at 2.8%
    • 39m at 1.0% nickel including 15m at 1.48%
    • 42m at 0.9% nickel
  • Key cobalt mineralised intersections from Zanzui include
    • 27m at 0.30% cobalt including 15m at 0.47%
    • 42m at 0.15% cobalt including 9m at 0.46%
    • 36m at 0.14% cobalt

Metallurgical drill samples have also been sent to Mintek in South Africa which have returned favourable acid leach results.

Currently Blackdown is focusing on exploring the sulphide potential of the Zanzui complex. Data from an airborne VTEM (Versatile Time Domain Electromagnetic) survey conducted in June 2008 and analysis of the data by Condor Consulting Inc of Lakewood, Colorado, USA has returned a number of potential sulphide targets that require further follow up work including a priority target located below Zanzui Hill.
